Planning Your Caribbean Cruise

Embarking on a Caribbean cruise is not just a regular vacation but a grand experience. It requires proper planning to ensure an unforgettable and stress-free journey. Before embarking on this adventure, THERE ARE 5 KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER when planning your Caribbean cruise:

1) Determine the duration of your trip. Do you have only a week or two, or can you take time off for a more extended voyage? The timing of your trip is also important as it may affect weather conditions, peak season rates, and crowd levels.  August-September is usually the height of hurricane season in the Caribbean, so prices are usually lowest at that point.  Cruise travel during Spring Break or the Christmas holiday season or the height of summer season, June-early July, are the times when prices are highest.

2) Decide on the departure port that best suits your itinerary and budget. There are several ports from which to choose, such as Miami, Port Canaveral, New York City, New Orleans, Galveston, Fort Lauderdale, and San Juan. These ports offer varying levels of accessibility and convenience in terms of flights and ground transportation. For an extra fee, most cruise lines offer round-trip ground transportation to/from the airport to the port of departure. Typical transport times are one hour each way via commercial bus.

Through the years Carnival, Royal, Princess, Disney and Norwegian cruise lines have scheduled a growing number of ships to homeport and make seasonal sailings from Galveston, Texas.  In November 2022, the port celebrated the opening of its third cruise terminal, a $125 million, state-of-the-art facility built at Pier 10 in partnership with Royal Caribbean. The new Galveston terminal is home to Allure of the Seas and other Royal Caribbean ships.

3) Passport or No Passport Required? Need to Renew Your Passport? It's also crucial to research and understand all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas, and other entry requirements necessary for each island stop. A lesser-known rule allows U.S. travelers to sail to some international destinations without a passport as long as they are on what is known as a “closed-loop cruise.”

As of April 2024, the processing time to renew a passport is 8 weeks maximum for standard renewals and 3 week maximums for expedited processing. Processing time does not include mailing time.  For super expedited times, three days to two weeks, third party companies such as Expedited Travel's RushMyPassport can process a passport renewal for $499 plus government fees.

4) Another crucial aspect is outlining your travel budget. Cruises come with various price ranges depending on certain factors like ship size, stateroom choice, onboard services or activities. You must create a realistic budget outlining costs such as airfare or any additional off-ship excursions that interest you. Plus, don't forget about gratuities/tips for staff once aboard – most of the time they are mandatory! Also you must include port and regular taxes.  Cruise insurance is also a good idea, but not required.

Choose the cabin type that best suits your needs. Do you prefer to enjoy ocean views from a balcony suite or opt for an interior cabin for budgetary reasons? Consider the onboard amenities and activities available when making this decision.

5) Finally, ensure you pack appropriately for the type of climate you'll encounter at each destination during your cruise. Most of the Caribbean (with the exception of the Southern Caribbean) is hot and humid all year round - so bring lightweight clothes that do not require much maintenance, like ironing. But don’t forget some formal wear when dining on the ship’s elegant evening dinners.

Now that you have effectively planned your Caribbean cruise, it's time to select the part of the Caribbean you wish to visit, the cruise line, and ship that suits your interests. You should also understand what is included in basic cruise fare and what is not included in basic cruise fare.

In the cruise industry, the Caribbean is broken up into three zones:

90% plus of Caribbean cruise sailings will visit only ONE of the three zones listed below so it is important to understand which Caribbean islands are in which zones and which departure ports cover which zones.

(1) The Western Caribbean (Mexico, Cayman Islands, Jamaica) with departures out of Miami or Galveston;

(2) The Eastern Caribbean (Bahamas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Antiqua) with departures out of Miami, Port Canaveral, and Ft. Lauderdale;

(3) The Southern Caribbean (Grenada, Aruba, Curacao) with departures out of Miami, Port Canveral, and Ft. Lauderdale.

Caribbean Cruise

You can ask a travel agency like Seven Seas Travel for further details on each area of the Caribbean. For example for the shortest and least expensive cruise, you may be best off with a 3-4 day Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami to the Bahamas and back. Another lower cost alternative are 4-7 day sailings from New Orleans on the Carnival Valor and Carnival Libery.

Another factor to consider for the Southern Caribbean is that it is usually much drier than the Western and Eastern Caribbean. The Caribbean hurricane region/belt usually stays north of the Southern Caribbean as well.

Basic Cruise Fares: What Is included, What Is Not

The cost of cruising may be difficult to estimate and analyze. A cruise fare might be presented on the web without taking into consideration port fees, revenues, and other expenses, which are usually only seen after providing your personal information.

Beware of flashy television or online advertisements which show only the (BASE) "cruise price" as that is not the full price you are going to pay to get on the ship.  The cruise industry is notorious for this "sales tactic".

Before you purchase your cruise, please be aware that the BASE cruise fare usually only includes basic food and beverage plus shows plus your cabin. To complete the booking/package, you wiil need to add port-regular taxes, gratuities, airfare, WIFI, many beverages, transfers from airport to/from port to airport. There also may be some restaurants on the ship which are classfied as "Specialty Dining" that are NOT part of the BASE cruise fare

One exception to this general rule is the "Adults Only" Virgin Cruises which includes port and regular taxes plus WIFI into their standard base cruise fare.  Another exception is some of the luxury/expedition small ship cruise lines (the majority of the river cruise lines).

Please keep in mind that most cruise lines only include ice water, flavored waters, brewed coffee, assorted teas, iced tea, hot chocolate, milk, lemonade, and fruit juices in the BASE cruise fare. These beverages are dispensed at self-serve machines and other casual dining venues and usually served in the main dining room and other restaurants. Any beverages consumed outside of the aforementioned beverage list will be charged to the onboard account of the passenger or will paid for as part of a cruise "beverage package" which can purchased before or after boarding the ship.

Check out the latest offering from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, The Utopia of the Seas, which first sailed in July 2024.  The Utopia of the Seas offers convenient three night Bahamas Cruises leaving from Orlando (Port Canaveral), Florida.

Something to consider?  Many newer cruise ships such as Icon of the Seas offer full scale Broadway shows which are included in the cruise package. These shows could cost you $100/person and up if you were to attend these shows on Broadway in New York City.

Be sure to check the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's Icon of the Seas, that sailed for the first time on 27 January 2024 from the port of Miami. Sailings will be 7 Night Eastern and Western CARIBBEAN throughout 2024. With over 20 ways to dine onboard, up to 6 Broadway full scale shows running at a given time, and 7 pool entertainment centers, there is something for just about everyone.

Cruise Line Packages that Can Save You Money

The least expensive base fare often does not always provide the highest return or premier set of vacation experiences. To lower overall costs, some cruise lines offer discounted airfares that can save you 10-25% on airfare to specific destinations (such as Alaska or Europe) that you would purchase from outside suppliers.  Airfare in peak season can be quite expensive so it is best to book as far ahead as possible, 11 months ahead.

Save Money, Purchase a Cruise Beverage Package, Is it worth it?

The purchase of "Beverage Packages" has become ever more complex in 2024 and 2025. Aggregate beverage package costs are usually priced by the passenger (NOT the cabin) multiplied by the number of days (day count) for the sailing.  Each cruise line offers several beverage packages with each package having its own set of rules for what is included and not included.

For a very detailed writeup of the various cruise line beverage packages, cruise customers should consult with a travel agency like Seven Seas Travel or refer to a well known cruise travel third party authority like Cruise Critic.

Generally speaking, beverage packages are divided into 3 to 4 categories which may include:

1) Deluxe Beverage Package that includes all cocktails, beers, and wines by the glass valued up to $14.
2) Medium Level Beverage Package with unlimited non-alcoholic beverages throughout the cruise.
3) Soda and/or Water Packages which includes all sodas and mineral waters throughout the cruise.

Caribbean Cruises

5 tips or things to remember when considering the purchase of the beverage package include:

1) To cost justify the purchase of the Deluxe Beverage Package on most cruise lines requires the consumption of 4-6 cocktails per day per guest.
2) While drink packages are sold on the ship, they are often going to be 10-30% cheaper if you buy them before you board the ship.
3) Cruise line gratuities and tipping can be confusing. It’s important to know that when you purchase a drink package, an 18-20% gratuity is added at this time. Tips are therefore paid on the value of the package, and not per drink as you order.
4) Some cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises and Carnival, have a daily limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per person/per day.
5) It can come as a surprise, but not all drinks are included in the alcoholic beverage package. The drink package will include drinks up to a certain limit. For instance, a basic beverage package may include drinks up to $14 a glass. Anything above that, and cruise passengers can simply pay the difference.

Selecting Your Cruise Line and Ship

When it comes to selecting a cruise line for your Caribbean vacation experience, there is an array of options from which to choose, ranging from classic and sophisticated lines to more contemporary and bold ones.

Consider what type of experience resonates with you. Are you a spontaneous traveler looking for more freedom or someone who wants everything planned and organized? Are you traveling solo or with family and friends?

Start by researching online reviews of various cruise lines and their ships. It may also be helpful to utilize a travel agent’s expertise, such as Seven Seas Travel, who can offer insight into specific ships' features.

 Click to CallClick to Call

Spend some time examining the different ships available, as each may have its own unique set of amenities and interactive programs. For instance, some provide immersive culinary experiences, while others emphasize entertainment opportunities like pool parties. Additionally, some may offer dazzling spas or water parks. Some of the larger newer ships offer one or more full-scale Broadway shows that come with the price of the cruise.

A Cruise Line for Every Budget

Some well known mainline cruise lines that sail the Caribbean include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).  Moving up the price ladder, we find Princess Cruise Line, Holland America Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruise Line, Oceania Cruise Line, and Crystal Cruise Line.

At the highest end for the bespoke traveler, we find SilverSea Cruise Line, WindStar Cruise Line, Ponant, Sea Cloud, and Star Clipper.

A new cruise line on the scene is Virgin Cruise Line which offers free WI-FI, free non alcohol beverages, and adults-only cruise adventures.  On the other end of the scale from Virgin Cruises, Disney Cruise Line offers the finest in family friendly cruises.
Caribbean Cruise

Don’t forget about off-ship excursions too! Certain cruise lines might excel in outdoor activities and shore excursions such as hiking, swimming or scuba diving. Consider what activities most interest you when choosing a line.

Selecting a cruise line is like selecting a dream car. They all look somewhat similar but feature different styles, safety features, technologies that could appeal to different individuals. Each line has its unique brand culture with emphasis on specific aspects like gaming, wellness sessions or live performances- consider this in relation to what activities you enjoy doing.

Also important is considering costs, itinerary planning flexibility/enjoyment level offered by different ships before making any payments.

Choosing Excursions/Ports of Call for Your Ideal Caribbean Itinerary

Click to CallClick to Call
Crafting the ideal itinerary can make or break your Caribbean cruise experience. Fortunately, with so many options available for ports and destinations, it's easy to tailor your itinerary to suit your preferences and needs. One strategy to consider is to focus on a specific theme or interest when selecting your destinations.

The vast majority of ports have a list of excursions you can sign up to visit before or after you board the ship.  Please keep in mind that popular excursions sell out quickly so it is best to book those high demand excursions before you board the ship.

A key consideration when crafting your itinerary is the amount of time spent on shore versus at sea. Some cruisers prefer a more leisurely pace with longer port stays, while others enjoy a mix of shore excursions and days at sea to take advantage of the ship's amenities.

Our top eight Caribbean islands for excursions include:

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Ports of Call for Natural Wonders

US Virgin Islands, St. John

If you prefer natural wonders, an itinerary that includes stops in the US Virgin Islands could be perfect for you. Amongst the three islands of the US Virgin Islands, St. John is a standout. One of the best places to snorkel in the Caribbean, you don’t have to venture far from shore to begin interacting with sea turtles and rays as you swim above corals that teem with a kaleidoscope of brilliantly colored fish.  On land, more than three dozen hiking trails beckon adventurers, crisscrossing the lush, 5,500-acre National Park. St. John is considered to have some of the most unspoiled underwater and terrestrial habitats found anywhere in the Caribbean.

Bahamas, Bimini

As the closest Bahamian group of islands to the U.S., Bimini is the true Island in the Stream, perched at the edge of a sheer underwater cliff that falls thousands of feet into the blue abyss. The Gulf Stream rushes north, washing past Bimini, feeding and warming its coral reefs and serving as a watery highway for everything from marlin to manta rays, dolphin to sea turtles.

Ernest Hemingway is closely tied to Bimini’s history, leading the way for generations of fishermen, many of whom pilot their own boats the 50 miles across the Gulf Stream from Florida in order to follow in Papa’s bare footsteps and pit themselves against some of the world’s feistiest game fish.

You can also embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and answer the call of the coral reefs on your next escape to Andros, Bimini. At Small Hope Bay Lodge, you can dive in and make a difference in an underwater excursion with The Reef Rescue Network. Powered by the Perry Institute for Marine Science, this ambitious reef rescue program works to protect the heart and soul of The Out Islands and the incredible coral reefs and the thousands of species of marine life that thrive there.

Ports of Call for Cultural Immersion

If cultural immersion is more your style, consider including a stop in Jamaica, a country with rich histories and vibrant local cultures. Another island for cultural immersion is Aruba

Jamaica

Jamaica, an island nation pulsing with rhythm and swathed in vibrant colors, offers a calendar filled with festivals that capture its rich cultural tapestry.  From the electrifying beats of Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival to the historical reflections of the Accompong Maroon Festival, these events are a journey through the heart and soul of Jamaican culture.
Some popular festivals include:

1) Accompong Maroon Festival:
Celebrated annually on January 6th, the Accompong Maroon Festival commemorates the signing of the peace treaty between the Maroons and the British in 1739. This event in St. Elizabeth offers a rare glimpse into the rich heritage of the Maroon communities, with traditional drumming, singing, and storytelling.
2) Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival:
The Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival is a testament to the island’s musical diversity, showcasing a mix of jazz, blues, R&B, and reggae. Held in late January in Montego Bay, it’s an event where international stars and local legends share the stage, offering a blend of soulful melodies and vibrant performances.
3) Jamaica Carnival:
Jamaica Carnival, taking place in April, is a whirlwind of feathers, sequins, and infectious rhythms, and is without a doubt one of the top attractions in Jamaica. It’s a celebration that sweeps through the streets of Kingston, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay, with soca and calypso music setting the pace for a week of dancing, parades, and masquerade balls.
4) Reggae Sumfest:
Reggae Sumfest is an institution that has celebrated Jamaican reggae music since 1993. Held in Montego Bay each July, Sumfest is a vibrant, week-long party that showcases the best of reggae, dancehall, and music from the Caribbean and beyond. It’s a sensory overload of live music, dance, and Jamaican cuisine.

Aruba

Unlike many of the islands in the Caribbean, Aruba was a Dutch colony for centuries and is known for its colorful and ornate Dutch Colonial architecture. The capital city of Oranjestad has the most impressive examples of this style.

In 1966, Aruba's Stichting Arubaanse Carnaval was founded, marking the official start of the Carnival season every year on November 11th at 11:11 a.m. Each year, the Carnival season officially begins at this precise moment. Ever since 1981, Tivoli has produced the Lighting Parade, a twinkling nighttime extravaganza. The bulk of Oranjestad, Aruba's Carnival events run from early January to mid February.

Besides the Lighting Parade, thousands of participants and spectators enjoy Children’s Parades, the Jouvert Morning Pajama Party, the Grand Carnival Parade in San Nicolas, and the exciting finale - the Grand Carnival Parade in Oranjestad. The midnight burning of King Momo, a life-size effigy, signals the end of the Aruba Carnival season on Shrove Tuesday, the day just before Ash Wednesday. This tradition symbolizes the burning of the Spirit of Carnival, who will rise again when the next season begins.

Ports of Call for Prime Beaches

If you are the beach person/enthusiast, Bermuda and its many pink sand beaches might be just the thing for you!  Be sure and hit up the island’s South Shore. More specifically, Warwick Long Bay, Marley Beach, and Horeshoe Bay Cove. Just like the level of sunlight affects how blue an ocean’s water appears, how much light hits the sand demonstrates a different shade of pink.

Another very sought after Caribbean island for beach enthuisasts is St. Barts. There are comparatively few cruise lines that stop in St. Barts, but you can find cruises available.  You can book a cruise through Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises, SeaDream Yacht Club, and Star Clippers.

Anse de Grand Cul de Sac is one of the best places to enjoy a watersport. The waters are normally very calm, warm, and shallow. Some of the best watersports to enjoy here can be anything from kitesurfing to kayaking or surfing to fly fishing. Flamands Beach is the largest beach on St. Barts. Tourists and residents alike love this beach for its fine white sand and its perfect conditions for windsurfing. It’s the perfect beach to relax on with a picnic, have a romantic stroll or play with family.

Ports of Call for 'Foodies'

If you're a foodie, you might choose an itinerary that includes stops in St. Maarten, where you can sample Dutch and French cuisine plus Nassau in the Bahamas

St. Maarten

From fine dining French establishments, to unpretentious Creole street food – there is something for everyone in the foodie
destination of Saint Martin. Famed for its blend of two countries on one island, St. Martin is home to both Dutch Sint
Maarten and French Saint-Martin. Which is perhaps why the island is dubbed the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean”.

Some standouts of Saint Martin's cuisine include: 1) Lolos, open-aired food stands that line the pier of Marigot. Here, local chefs, better known as Belongers, serve up creative, flavorful Creole dishes such as johnny cakes, fried plantains, codfish, satay, doubles (two fried flatbreads (bara) filled with curried chickpeas (chana)). 2) Standing on the edge of Baie Nettlé, enjoy La Cigale, a well-known institution on the island renowned for their traditional French cuisine.  The menu features seafood dishes such as lobster truffled bisque soup, sea scallops, and fresh sea bass fillet.

Caribbean Cruise

Bahamas, New Providence Island, Nassau

The port of Nassau in the Bahamas features several outsanding culinary themed excursions which include: 1) A tour of Graycliff that combines a chocolate tasting and cigar-rolling demonstration with a museum visit at the renowned Graycliff property; 2) A Bahamian Food Tour where you can eat like a local with this off-the-beaten-path tasting tour that takes guests through Nassau’s vibrant downtown neighborhood; 3) Visit John Watling’s Distillery wher guests are served a taste of the “Spirit of The Bahamas,” handcrafted by Bahamians using local ingredients and traditional English rum-making methods.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Chocal: Experience the perfect blend of cultural immersion and community support with this impactful tour. Travel 40 minutes from the port to the small community of Altamira, where you'll visit "Chocal," a tiny organic-chocolate factory run by local women. Get your hands dirty and contribute to the cultivation of cacao plants, from preparing the soil to planting the seeds in the nursery.

Afterward, join in the production and packaging of the chocolate bars sold by the factory. Gain comprehensive experience by assisting at different workstations. Bid farewell to the grateful local women after a fulfilling day, knowing that your support has made a difference.

With your itinerary set, it's time to dive into the all-inclusive indulgences that Caribbean cruising has to offer.

The All-Inclusive Indulgences of Caribbean Cruising

One of the biggest appeals of a Caribbean luxury cruise is the all-inclusive nature of the experience. From dining to entertainment, everything you need is conveniently located on board the ship.

Dining options are varied and abundant, with many cruise lines offering a range of specialty restaurants in addition to the main dining room. These range from casual poolside eateries to upscale fine dining experiences. Depending on the cruise line, these speciality restaurants may or may not be included with the regular cruise fare.

But the indulgences don't stop there. On-board activities cater to all age groups and interests, from Broadway-style shows to cooking classes and wine tastings. For those who want to continue their fitness routine while on vacation, state-of-the-art gyms and wellness centers are available for use.

In addition, many Caribbean cruises include complimentary access to off-shore resort areas for exclusive beach experiences reminiscent of luxurious private islands. Celebrity Cruises, for instance, provides guests with exclusive access to a Bahamian resort during their sailings.

And perhaps one of the biggest perks of all: the convenience of unpacking once and having your accommodations travel with you from destination to destination without ever needing to pack or unpack before boarding and disembarking.

Private Island Options from The Cruise Companies:

The Caribbean has several private islands that are utilized by various cruise companies:

1) Royal Caribbean International offers an unparalleled experience on their private island, 'Perfect Day at CocoCay', where there are new culinary options like custom burgers through food trucks, as well as one-of-a-kind immersive experiences in its celebrated Thrill Waterpark. Several hundred beach chairs are scattered at water's edge around the small island.

In January 2024, Royal Caribbean opened up its new 'Hideaway Beach' attraction at Perfect Day at CocoCay. You will find the ultimate beachfront party in paradise just for adults — Hideaway BeachSM only on Royal Caribbean®. Swim right up to the popping Hideaway BarSM, fueled by non-stop DJ-spun beats. Keep the energy fed with tasty pizzas from Slice of ParadiseSM and flavorful all-American faves from Snack Shack.

Price for Day Pass to go to Hideaway Beach is variable, depending on the ship you are on. Prices for the Day Pass range from $40 to $120/person. Hideaway Beach is adults only. Cabanas at Hideaway Beach can run from $1,200 to $2,000 per day. Cabana holds ten people.

2) NCL Cruises has two great private Caribbean islands known as Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas) and Harvest Caye (Belize).

 Click to CallClick to Call

4) MSC Cruises has Ocean Cay (Bahamas).

5)  Disney Cruises has Castaway Cay (Bahamas) and Lookout Cay (Opened 1st week, JULY 2024).

Lookout Cay is a gorgeous island that opened in the first week of July 2024 and features a celebration of Bahamian storytelling, arts, and culture in addition to lots of relaxation in the company of nature. The destination's vibrant entrance point is Mabrika Cove.
In Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are thought to be the indigenous inhabitants of The Bahamas, "mabrika" means "welcome." There are still certain terms in the language, one of which is "Mabrika," even if it is no longer in use. When visitors arrive at the Cove, they will feel the warmth of Bahamian culture right away.

The Goombay Cultural Center captures the spirit of "Junkanoo," a lively procession and upbeat music festival that takes place around Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. One of the oldest musical genres in The Bahamas is goombay, which combines drumming, dancing, and singing. The vibrantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch beckon visitors to immerse themselves in Bahamas customs and the sights, sounds, and vibe of the nation's most popular celebration.

Triton's Trumpet Stage offers a ton of family-friendly entertainment for visitors to the island. On our last Carnival Cruise trip, we were fortunate enough to participate in an off-road tropical adventure in Cozumel, Mexico. It ended up being one of the highlights of our entire cruise vacation as it brought the pure adrenaline rush while experiencing the island's volcanic terrain.

By offering immersive shore excursions crafted for all tastes and unique experiences, guests can completely customize their dream vacation while enjoying the luxury ship amenities adorning the beautiful Caribbean seas.

Reveling in Natural Wonders

One of the most compelling reasons to embark on a Caribbean cruise is the opportunity to explore the region's unparalleled natural wonders. One such natural wonder is Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica, a breathtaking cascading waterfall that drops over 900 feet into the ocean below. Visitors can climb up the falls' terraced tiers with the help of expert guides or simply take in the stunning views from below. Another must-see destination for nature lovers is St. Lucia's majestic Pitons, two towering volcanic peaks that rise out of the sea and provide a dramatic backdrop for exploring this lush island paradise.

For those seeking a more secluded getaway, a visit to one of the Caribbean's many uninhabited islands is an absolute must. These remote paradises offer unspoiled beauty and tranquility, with opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and simply soaking up the sun on pristine white sand beaches.

During our own luxury cruise through the Caribbean in late 2021, we had the pleasure of experiencing some of these natural wonders firsthand. One particular highlight was exploring the breathtaking underwater caves off Belize's Barrier Reef, where we encountered stunning coral formations and an array of vibrant marine life.
