Seven Frequently Asked Questions:

How long is a trip to Antarctica?

It depends on your itinerary. The Antarctic "classic" trips are usually between 9 and 11 days. “Crossing the Antarctic Circle” trips and “Weddell Sea” specials can sometimes be 10 to 13 days, and longer “Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Antarctica” voyages are between 18 and 21 days. There are even longer expeditions that take you to the Ross Sea in East Antarctica, and these can be around 30 days.

Do I need a visa?

No, not for Antarctica. And most countries do not need a visa to enter Argentina or Chile if you are a USA citizen and you are going for 90 days or less.

What are the best times to visit Antarctica?

November to December

This is a beautiful time in Antarctica. The penguins are back on land and mating rituals are in full swing. You’ll see nest building, stone stealing and all kinds of penguin drama as they prepare to become parents once again. The penguins lay their eggs, taking good care to keep them warm, and many chicks will hatch before the year’s end. Around this time, whales return to Antarctica to feed. Minkes, southern right whales and humpbacks all swim in Antarctica’s waters. December has the longest days, with up to 20 hours of proper sunlight.

January to February

These are the warmest months in Antarctica, when the animals that call it home put on quite a show. Penguin chicks start to hatch and their parents take it in turns going out to sea to catch krill for feeding time. Predators, like leopard seals, grow bolder as the chicks hatch and enter the ocean for the first time. Amongst all the action, whales arrive at the peninsula to feed. Snow tends to melt around this time, revealing remarkable historical relics.

March

This is considered late season as the sun sinks further below the horizon. The snow cover is at its minimum, which allows for longer walks and hikes during landings. Whale watching continues to be a highlight, and penguin chicks are now adolescents who are curious about tourists, although still dependent on their parents for food.

Antarctica Cruise

What Wildlife and Flora Can I expect to see in Antarctica?

One can expect to see penguins, whales, and seals in Antarctica. Polar bears, reindeer, oxen, Artic fox, whales, walruses, and several species of birds such as Puffins, Cormorants, Skuas, Arctic Terns, Gannets, Eiders, Sanderlings are seen in the Artic. Antarctica is not known for its flora whereas the Artic is known for colorful flowers and flora such as Saxifrage, Bearberry, Moss Campion, Mountain Sorrel, Mountain Avens, and Wooly Lousewort.

What is the Liklihood of Seeing Wildlife in Antarctica?

Wildlife will/do not appear upon request.  Often times, it is a matter of luck what you will see. In Antarctica, the ships have to keep a distance from the whales so you may not get a full view of the whales. With penguins and seals, you can get very close.

What are the chances of getting to every port of call listed in the cruise brochure?

Due to rough seas and quickly changing weather conditions, some landings may be postponed or cancelled.  Substitute landing locations are always a possibility. You should be fit and be ready to walk through snow and scale some mountains and hills. Please be prepared to handle wet landings via Zodiac and embark/disembark via Zodiac. Landings start from 630AM and often go to 11AM.

What is the cruise ship entertainment like?

Do not expect the usual cruise ship entertainment. Entertainment is focused upon enrichment lectures, daily recaps, and briefings on future landings. Speakers are expedition experts. There are no holidays. Sighting announcements from ship's intercom go on all day and all night.

Travel Deals: Make the Most of Your Voyage

Embarking on a luxury cruise to Antarctica is not only an exciting adventure but also a significant investment which can range from $4,500 to $25,000 per person depending on the ship and the itinerary. To ensure you make the most of your voyage and optimize your experience, it's worth exploring the various travel deals available. Generally speaking, there are two types of deals that include:

The Last Minute or Close-In Deal

As the Antarctica cruise is relatively short, five months, the later in the year you get to the start of the season which starts in November, the better your chances of catching a good deal. This sort of deal is known as a (last minute) close-in deal.

Luxury cruise operators often release last-minute deals for empty cabins close to departure dates. These offers can present significant savings for travelers who are open to flexibility and can make arrangements on short notice. A last-minute offer may suit those who love living life on the edge and are comfortable with a certain level of unpredictability. Imagine receiving an unexpected email announcing a limited-time deal for an Antarctica cruise departing in just a few weeks' time.

The Early Booking Discount Deal

On the other end of the specturm is a popular type of travel deal known as the early booking discount. Many luxury cruise operators, such as Silversea, offer incentives for travelers who book their Antarctica expedition 12 to 24 months in advance. By reserving your spot early, you not only secure your preferred travel dates but also enjoy considerable savings on the overall cost. This is particularly beneficial for those who prefer to plan ahead and have flexibility in their schedules.Another type of travel deal worth considering is the last-minute offer which usually applies to sailings that are 30-120 days away.

Included Extras Offered by Antarctica Cruises

Another important fact worth mentioning is that most Antarctica cruises usually include much more than conventional cruises at no additonal expense.  Items such as local charter air service, winter clothing (parkas, boots, vests), beverages (fine wines and spirits), gratuities, and excursions via kayak/zodiac are often included.

Types of Antarctica Cruises by Cruise Line:

3 Main Types of Cruise Ships

Generally speaking, there are three classes of ship sailing to Antarctica. Those three classes of ships are:
Mainline large general purpose ships, >1,000 passengers
Expedition ships, 10-100 passengers
Premium Expedition ships, 90-200 passengers

Details of Each Type of Cruise Ship

Mainline Large General Purpose Ships:

These ships usually don't stop and dock at individual islands and ports of call. They do not have a fleet of Zodiac boats to go in and out from various islands.

Expedition Ships:

Many of the expedition ships were originally built for science and exploration purposes, and later were refitted for conducting tourism. Retrofits and modernizations have occurred over time. The expedition ships are clean, well maintained, and perfectly comfortable but do not come with amenities that the premium ships contain. Some may prefer the expedition ship to the premium ship aka the fancy ‘cruise ship’. The expedition ship usually have far fewer passengers than the premium ships. Some expedition ships have new engines which mean they cruise faster than the new premium ships.

Premium Expedition Ships:

On the other hand on the premium ships, you often get access to professional photographers, naturalists and professors.
Many of the premium ships were designed for passenger comforts and thus have the highest Polar code 6 and Ice class 1A designs.
This means a very sturdy construction which provides high stability in rough weather and allows for the smoothest movements on high waves. Most if not all ships feature an educational program plus the standard expedition cruising excursions (landings and zodiac cruising).

There are close to 20 different cruise ship lines sailing to and from Antarctica. This list of cruise companies includes:

Aurora Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, Lindblad Expeditions, Silverseas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, Atlas Ocean Voyages, Hurtigruten (HX), Viking Antarctica Expeditions, Wayfinders Adventures, Albatross Expeditions, Antarctica 21, Oceanwide Expeditions, G Adventures, Tauck, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, and Princess Cruises.

Of these cruise ship lines, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, and Princess Cruises belong to the Mainline Cruise Ship Lines

Several of these cruise ship lines are more Expedition oriented. This list includes Hurtigruten (HX)Wayfinders AdventuresAlbatros ExpeditionsAntarctica 21, and G Adventures

Last, several cruise lines cater to the Premium Expedition Market. These cruise ship lines include: Aurora ExpeditionsQuark ExpeditionsLindblad Expeditions, Silverseas CruisesSeabourn Cruise LineAtlas Ocean VoyagesViking Antarctica ExpeditionsPonant, and Tauck.

Furthermore, the ethereal beauty of Antarctica extends beneath the water's surface. Through state-of-the-art exploration tools such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), you can witness mesmerizing footage of the ocean floor and its vibrant marine life. Expert onboard biologists and undersea specialists will offer captivating presentations that deepen your understanding of this remarkable underwater world.

Now that we've delved into the allure of Antarctica, let us continue our journey by exploring the ROUTE we'll follow during this incredible adventure.

Your Route: Navigating the Southern Sea

Antarctica Cruise

Starting the Journey

Embarking on a luxury cruise to Antarctica is a truly remarkable journey, and understanding the route you'll take through the Southern Sea can amplify the excitement and anticipation of your adventure.

1) The itinerary typically begins with an overnight flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago, where you'll immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Argentina or Chile before continuing on to your ultimate destination. From there, you'll head to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, often referred to as the "End of the World." This picturesque city serves as the gateway to Antarctica, with its charming streets nestled between towering mountains and serene Beagle Channel. In Ushuaia, you will embark on your luxurious ship, ready to set sail towards the frozen wonders that lie ahead.

2) As you depart from Ushuaia, your ship will navigate through one of the most legendary passages in maritime history - the renowned Drake Passage. This epic waterway connects the South Atlantic Ocean with the Southern Ocean and can elicit a mix of emotions, from awe-inspiring beauty to a sense of adventure as you cross these mighty seas.

As you cross the Drake Passage, your luxury cruise ship will offer a range of engaging activities onboard. Expert naturalists and historians will captivate your imagination with enthralling talks about wildlife, geology, and polar exploration. These knowledgeable guides will provide valuable insights into this unique region while setting an inspirational backdrop for what lies ahead.

After sailing through the Drake Passage and absorbing all there is to learn from onboard experts, it's time to prepare yourself for one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles – the enchanting sights of glaciers, icebergs, and a remarkable array of penguins.

Continuing the Journey: Key Stops in Antarctic Exploration

3) Embarking on an expedition cruise to Antarctica is an unparalleled opportunity to explore the breathtaking beauty and untamed wilderness of this icy continent. Throughout your journey, you'll have the chance to visit several remarkable ports of call that serve as gateways to unforgettable experiences.

One such port of call is the enchanting Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches out toward South America. As your ship approaches this region, prepare yourself for a display of towering glaciers, jagged peaks, and pristine snowfields. Step ashore and let yourself be immersed in a world of wonder as you encounter colonies of penguins waddling along rocky shores, seals basking lazily in the sun, and majestic whales gracefully swimming through the frigid waters.

4) Moving further south, another pivotal stop is the South Shetland Islands. These remote islands are an adventurer's playground, offering the chance to embark on thrilling Zodiac cruises through icy channels and narrow straits. Traverse rugged coastlines dotted with massive icebergs and witness firsthand the incredible power of nature at work. Keep your eyes peeled for bustling colonies of seabirds taking flight overhead or catching glimpses of playful seals splashing about in the crystal-clear waters.

Antarctica Cruise

5) Now, imagine setting foot on Deception Island, a volcanic caldera that provides a unique environment for exploration. Here, hidden hot springs create pockets of warmth amidst the icy surroundings. Delve into this otherworldly landscape as you wander along black sand beaches or take a dip in the geothermally heated waters—an experience like no other.

South Georgia Island

6) It is hard to arrive in South Georgia Island by flying due to its sub-Antarctic environment, so the government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands suggest traveling by boat to uncover the amazing attractions on the island.

It is strongly advised to reserve your travel on a vessel that is specifically structured for polar conditions. These boats are produced to handle the extreme temperatures of South Georgia Island, allowing you to access South Georgia Island safely and enjoy an amazing trip. A ship manned by an experienced group of Arctic professionals can submerge you in the Arctic habitat, aid you in finding native fauna safely, and take you on thrilling off-vessel excursions.

Visitors are usually embraced on South Georgia Island, except for the winter season from May to September when extreme cold weather, considerable snowfall, and ice along the shoreline make it inaccessible.

What is the ideal period for touring South Georgia Island? Photographers relish the season of spring to take pictures of animals coming out of winter seclusion. Elephants seals display a lot of activity during the springtime, while fur seals slowly come out of their hibernation period to mate on the coastline of South Georgia Island.

As thrilling as these port calls may be, they are just a taste of what awaits when venturing deeper into Antarctica's majesty. Brace yourself for awe-inspiring encounters with some of the most magnificent ice formations on Earth.

Antarctica Cruise

Enthralling Sights: Glaciers, Icebergs, and Penguins

Antarctica is a land of staggering beauty and diversity, drenched in ethereal landscapes that will leave you awe-inspired at every turn. One of the highlights of your luxury cruise is undoubtedly the opportunity to witness magnificent glaciers - frozen rivers of ice that spill from vast ice sheets into the sea. As your ship navigates through icy channels, these colossal formations tower above you, their glistening blue hues sparkling in the sunlight.

The sight of floating icebergs is nothing short of mesmerizing. These towering masses of ancient ice come in various shapes and sizes, each possessing its own unique characteristics. Some may be smooth and sculpted by wind and waves, while others boast jagged edges and vivid streaks of blue. As you cruise past these majestic ice sculptures, keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife seeking refuge or resting atop these natural floating wonders.

Photograpy Tips for Antarctica

Weather Sealing:

Please be sure that camera and lenses have moderate weather sealing and will survive a full wave splash while on the zodiac. Whatever photographic gear you choose, spend time with it ahead of the trip and learn how it works and get comfortable with it. Do NOT try to change lens in the rain.

Redundancy:

It is important that you have 2 camera bodies as one can fail. It is very useful to have a wide angle zoom on one body and telephoto zoom on the other body as you do NOT want to be changing lenses in the field.

Antarctica cruises

Image Stabilization and Wide Angle Lenses:

Since many of your photos will either be from the deck of a ship or hand-held, image stabilization is imperative. Long lenses in Antarctica are less useful than really wide angles. In the Olympus line of lenses, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm F4.0 IS PRO has image stabilization and has a zoom range that would probably cover 95% of all your shots. However, the brand of camera is not all that important. You will mostly be shooting on daylight with deep depth of field to capture scenery or moderate depth of field to capture wildlife.

Polarizing Filters:

You should use polarizing filters to really bring out the colors of the ice and reduce glare. For that matter, every lens should have at least a UV filter on it to protect it from sea spray, salt, rain, and random scratches. Take extra batteries, and equip it with the biggest, best memory card you can afford.

Antarctica Cruise

No trip to Antarctica would be complete without encountering one of its most iconic inhabitants – penguins! These charismatic creatures waddle along the icy shores and dive effortlessly into the frigid waters surrounding their habitat. You might find yourself captivated by their amusing antics as they slide on their bellies across the snow or curiously approach you with an innocent gaze. These encounters provide unforgettable moments that transcend any postcard or documentary portrayal.

Some varieties of penguins that can be found around the Antarctica region include Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adélie. In the South Georgia Island region, King penguins and Emperor penguins can be found. In the Falkland Islands region, Rock Hopper penguins and King penguins are oten found.

Antarctic Life: Polar Wildlife Encounters

Antarctica, often referred to as a frozen paradise, is home to an astonishing array of polar wildlife.

Imagine standing on the deck of your cruise ship, surrounded by towering icebergs and breathtaking landscapes, when suddenly a group of curious penguins waddles by. These charismatic birds are one of the main highlights of any Antarctic journey. With their comical antics and endearing personalities, penguins never fail to captivate the hearts of travelers. Whether it's the iconic Emperor Penguins or the charming Gentoo Penguins, observing them in their colonies or elegantly gliding through the icy waters is an experience that will stay with you forever.

But it's not just about penguins in Antarctica. Whales grace these pristine waters with their immense presence. Picture yourself witnessing a humpback whale breaching spectacularly out of the water, or a pod of killer whales gracefully swimming alongside your ship. The sight of these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is both humbling and exhilarating.

Antarctica Cruise

Let us share a personal anecdote from my own expedition to Antarctica. On one unforgettable day, our expedition team spotted a group of fur seals lounging lazily on an iceberg. As we approached closer on our Zodiac, they curiously inspected us before diving back into the icy depths. It was a surreal experience being so close to these enigmatic creatures and observing their agility underwater.

Seals are another integral part of Antarctic wildlife encounters. From Weddell seals resting on ice floes to leopard seals gracefully maneuvering through the water, each encounter provides a unique glimpse into their fascinating lives. These marine mammals are often seen basking in the Antarctic sun or popping their heads out of the water, creating picture-perfect moments for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Penguins, Whales, and Seals: A Closer Look

To truly appreciate the wonders of Antarctica's polar wildlife, let's delve deeper into the magnificent beings that capture our imagination.

Emperor penguins, the largest of all penguin species, have a remarkable breeding cycle. Male penguins incubate a single egg on their feet while braving brutal Antarctic winters, enduring harsh conditions without eating for months. Once the chicks hatch, adorable fluffballs emerge into the world and form crèches where they receive parental care until they mature. Observing these cute chicks huddling together or taking their first wobbly steps is a heartwarming sight that leaves a lasting impression.

Whales are another marvel of Antarctic life. The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica teems with rich marine life that sustains numerous whale species. From massive humpback whales breaching to graceful minke whales gliding through icy waters, each encounter offers a glimpse into their majestic existence. These marine giants migrate thousands of kilometers to feed in these krill-rich waters before embarking on epic journeys to breed in warmer climates.

Seals are integral residents of Antarctica's ecosystems as well. Weddell seals, with their distinct spotted coats, endure the continent's extreme temperatures by spending much of their time underwater. Leopard seals, known for their impressive size and ferocity, are skilled hunters, taking advantage of penguins and other prey. Observing these top predators in action showcases the delicate balance of nature in Antarctica.

Off the Ship: Exciting Shore Excursions

One of the highlights of exploring Antarctica on a luxury cruise is the opportunity to go on exciting shore excursions and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of this frozen continent. These shore excursions offer a chance to experience Antarctica up close and personal, engaging with its pristine landscapes and incredible wildlife.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Antarctic shore excursions is encountering the incredible wildlife that calls this icy wilderness home. As you explore further, you may come across majestic seals basking lazily on ice floes or leopard seals hunting for prey with remarkable agility. And keep your eyes peeled for magnificent whales breaching the surface, showcasing their immense size and power.

But it's not only about wildlife encounters – these excursions also offer opportunities for awe-inspiring experiences among mesmerizing landscapes. What special clothes do I need to pack for Antarctica ?

1. Wool Layers  You will need thermal socks, an insulating layer, a base layer, and thick socks on top for onshore exploration. The warmest option is wool.

2. Insulation Layers   Above your woolen base layers come these breathable layers. For your Expedition Voyage, at least five tops and bottoms are required. Lightweight, breathable pants that are broad enough to cover your boots are ideal. Velcro is not recommended for pants because it poses a risk to biosecurity. Costco offers a fleece-lined insulated pants line from Eddie Bauer that is quite suitable and less expensive than most.  A good choice of jacket might be a waxed canvas jacket with fleece liner.

Loose fitting waterproof pants, Gore Tex pants, are ideal for comfort when sitting in the Zodiac.  Costco offers a lower cost Gore Tex line called ShedRain Golf.

3. A Scarf, Gloves, and Hat  An essential piece of gear to bring to Antarctica is a wool cap that protects your ears. both glove liners and waterproof gloves. A neck gaiter and scarf, and preferable something that can cover your face as it can get windy at times. We recommend bringing at least two of each item.

4. Sunscreen  An essential piece of gear to bring to Antarctica is a wool cap that protects your ears. both glove liners and waterproof gloves. a scarf and neck gaiter, and ideally something to shield your face because it can get windy at times. It is advised to bring two or more of each item.

5. Balm In the polar areas, lips are prone to chapping due to dry winds, low temperatures, and abundant sunshine. Bring along an ample supply of thick, UV-protective lip balm, such as a Blistex.

6. Your Camera   There is photography in Antarctica, where there is a wonderful moment around every corner of this amazing area. Your camera is a must-have, but you should also include extra memory cards and a replacement battery.

 7. A Phone Case A lanyard with waterproof case for your phone, so it doesn't slip out of your pocket it as you climb in and out of the Zodiacs, to join many other phones on the bottom of the Southern Ocean.
